Mother baby nurses take care of patients before and after labor, and ensure that mothers and newborns are healthy and bonding. Many hospitals refer to the mother baby unit as the postpartum or maternity unit. Duties of mother baby nurses include educating parents on proper newborn care, providing breastfeeding assistance, and monitoring the mother and baby's well-being while still in the hospital. Mother baby travel nurses are also responsible for answering questions and providing educational resources to the mother prior to her release. In some hospitals, RNs in mother baby nursing positions are often cross-trained as labor and delivery nurses which can broaden clinical experience and prepare RNs for a greater selection of travel nurse positions.
