It is important for RNs in the recovery room to quickly make critical patient assessments as the on-call doctor may be unavailable during an emergency. Ideal candidates for post-anesthesia care units have natural abilities to think critically and histories of fast, accurate diagnoses. Past experience in critical care and surgical nursing is a plus.
