Summer is here, and we’re not sorry about it. A yearning for adventure often accompanies the plentiful sunshine and long days of summer - so we’ve compiled a list of top travel nurse destinations for the season!

#1 - Boston

Seriously, have you seen this city? Boston boasts a beautiful skyline, clean streets, an alluring mixture of old and new, and plenty of parks, gardens, and other green spaces.
  • For the history buff
  • The Freedom Trail - This 2.5-mile red brick road leads you on a walking tour through Boston’s incredible history. It includes highlights like the site of the Boston massacre, the Old North Church, and the Bunker HIll monument. Plus, you’ll get to see the bulk of downtown Boston as you go!
  • For the culture lover
  • The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum - This unique museum, composed mostly of American, Asian, European art, was once a private collection and is still housed in the building that was the benefactress’s home. If that isn’t exciting enough, this museum was also the victim of the still-unsolved 1990 art heist.
  • For the outdoorsman
  • Kayak/Canoe on the Charles River - Does this really need an explanation? Enjoy the outdoors with beautiful views of the city as you paddle along the historic Charles River.
  • Hike in the White Mountains - Okay, so this isn’t really Boston. But many people don’t realize that you’re less than three hours from the true outdoors even in the heart of the city. A quick drive, and you’re in nature! Franconia Ridge is a truly spectacular hike, if you’re up for a challenging workout.
  • For the foodie
  • The North End - The North End, Boston’s “Little Italy,” is a place of legend. While you can’t go wrong with any spot on Hanover Street, also consider checking out one of the smaller, family-run restaurants on the side streets! Regina Pizzeria has a well-deserved cult following, as does the famed Mike’s Pastry - an absolute must.
  • Newbury Street - If you’re looking for something a little more posh, Newbury Street, an upscale, tree-lined street that ends in the Boston Common, is packed with award-winning restaurants and open-air cafes.
  • For the sports fan
  • Fenway Park - Whether you’re a Red Sox fan, a baseball fan, or just a sports fan, you cannot spend any length of time in Boston and not visit the much-beloved Fenway Park. The oldest stadium in the MLB, Fenway is an institution in and of itself.
In addition to these accolades, Boston also boasts some of the most prestigious hospitals and medical centers in the country. So while you’re living it up this summer, you can also be growing your clinical skills and building your resume with a Boston travel nurse job.

#2 - Denver

Denver, the mile-high city, is the dream summer travel nurse destination. Whether you’re looking for food and concerts or an escape into the mountains, Denver is calling!

  • The Denver Museum of Nature and Science - This 716,000-square-foot museum is responsible for over 4.3 million artifacts and specimens. This summer, it is also home to Leonardo da Vinci: 500 Years of Genius, an extensive da Vinci exhibit that includes life-size replicas of the machines da Vinci invented, a dive into the “Mona Lisa,” and more.

  • The Red Rocks Amphitheater - This stunning open-air amphitheater is built into red rocks that provide great acoustics and a stunning backdrop for concerts, film screenings, and even yoga. This summer, concerts include Nora Jones, Tenacious D, and Lionel Richie.
  • For the outdoorsman
  • Literally ANYTHING - Really, you’re going to have to do some research on this one. Colorado is home to four national parks, 11 national forests, and 41 state parks - so you can truly find any outdoor adventure you’re looking for. Fish, backpack, hike, horseback ride, rock climb, river raft .. .just get out there!
  • For the foodie
  • Larimer Square - Larimer Square, the oldest block in city, is the epicenter of Denver’s farm-to-table movement. Enjoy local ingredients and flavors on outdoor patios under twinkling lights. If you’re feeling thirsty, pop in to one of the speakeasies or nearby microbreweries.
  • For the sports fan
  • The Denver Outlaws - If you’re looking for something a little more unique this summer, consider hitting a Major League Lacrosse game with the Denver Outlaws! The Outlaws won the 2018 championship and are off to a great start in 2019.
For those considering a Denver travel nurse job, keep in mind that Colorado is a ! This means if you have a nursing license with multi-state privileges, you can practice in Colorado - so you’re one step closer to spending your summer in the Rockies.

#3 - New Orleans

New Orleans knows how to party - and during summer, the party never ends! The city brags that if you’re willing to embrace the heat, you’ll find cheap food and fun all summer long.

  • Antebellum Plantations - Take a stroll back in time with a visit to one of the New Orleans-area antebellum plantations. Many of the plantations offer guided tours of the buildings and grounds, where visitors are given glimpses into extreme wealth and opulence alongside the blight of slavery.
  • For the art lover
  • The Satchmo Summerfest - This summertime jazz festival, named for the beloved New Orleans native Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, includes live bands on three stages, food stalls stocked with New Orleans favorites, and events at the Jazz Museum.
  • For the outdoorsman
  • Airboat Swamp Tour - How could you visit New Orleans and NOT do a swamp tour? Get out of the city and into the bayous, where you’ll see alligators and other local wildlife.
  • Bicycle Tours - New Orleans boasts a plethora of bicycle tour options, from guided history tours through the French Quarter to flora and fauna tours in the Garden District. There’s even a ghost-themed tour for those looking for goosebumps!
  • For the foodie
  • COOLinary New Orleans - The entire month of August is COOLinary New Orleans, which means three-course prix fixe meals at award-winning restaurants across the city for around $30/plate. Eat up!
  • For the sports fan -
  • The New Orleans Baby Cakes - What better way to spend a summer evening than watching baseball? Especially when the home team is the New Orleans Baby Cakes, the Triple-A team for the Miami Marlins. This is likely their last season in New Orleans, so see them while you can!

#4 - San Francisco

If you’re looking for somewhere you could spend 13 weeks and still have 100 things left on your to-do list, with weather rarely below 65 degrees and rarely above 80, with some of the nation’s most renowned hospitals and medical centers, head to SanFran!
  • For the history buff
  • Alcatraz Island - Technically a national park, Alcatraz is one of the most iconic sites in San Francisco. The island has been a fort, military prison, and, most famously, a federal maximum security prison that housed the likes of Al Capone, Bernard Coy, and Frank Morris, Sam Shockley. Today you can tour the site and learn about the fascinating inmates, daring escape attempts, and vengeful ghosts.

  • The San Francisco Ballet - For those looking to add a little class to their summers, the San Francisco Ballet is a must. Reportedly one of the best ballet companies in the country, the SF Ballet has performances throughout the summer. For those looking for culture at a discount, the ballet sells 200 discount standing-room-only tickets the day of each performance.
  • For the outdoorsman
  • Kayak - Get a workout with stunning views of the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate bridge as you paddle the bays and coves of SanFran. Feeling lucky? Swing by McCovey Cover, where you could catch a ball leaving AT&T Park, home of the MLB Giants.
  • For the foodie
  • SanFran Food Tour - There is way too much good food in San Francisco for one person to conquer on their own. Thus, we recommend a food tour. The city boasts many of them, from general overview tours to specific tours that are sure to quench your most acute cravings.
  • For the sports fan
  • Go Golfing - San Francisco is home to some of the oldest (and most beautiful) golf courses in the country! TPC Harding Park promises stunning views of the ocean, while Presidio Golf Course, constructed in 1895, is set in the heart of the picturesque Presidio Forest.
There is good news (with an asterisk) for nurses looking forward to San Francisco travel nursing jobs. The asterisk is that the California licensing process is notoriously slow, so if you aren’t already licensed in California (or well into the process), the licensing process can take weeks or months. The good news, however, is that jobs post in San Francisco frequently, and California boasts some of the highest travel nurse pay. So start planning early!
