Eco-friendly and reusable items for a travel nurse assignment

Eco-Friendly and Reusable Items for Easy Assignment Packing

Make your packing easier from one assignment to the next with reusable and eco-friendly items.
As a traveling healthcare clinician, you’re familiar with what it’s like to hit the road. After all, “travel” is the name of the job! But you’re more than just a merry wanderer: you want to carefully choose what to bring with you, especially if you find yourself packing and unpacking for a new assignment every few months.

Why Packing Light Makes Sense for Every Traveler

Okay, let’s get the non-negotiables out of the way: be sure to pack up yourself, your travel companions (partners, pets, family, or friends – if they’re coming along), essential documents, meds, and tech devices. As for everything else, thinking ‘minimal’ can be a real plus. Why?
  • You can save money by not buying disposables
  • You spend less time packing
  • You make room for ‘save-your-life’ items, like an emergency road kit
  • You have less stuff to haul in and out of your new accommodations
  • Reducing the overall weight of your vehicle increases fuel economy

Eco-Friendly Reusable Items

  • An all-purpose stainless steel water bottle (as opposed to a BPA-free plastic reusable water bottle, which is still more likely to breed bacteria due to potential small cracks) – is available at many outdoor gear retailers such as REI and L.L. Bean.
  • Consider a small-scale water filter to use with that water bottle. You’ve probably heard what plastic water bottles are doing in the Pacific. It’s not good.
  • Porcelain mug with matching lid (rather than throw-away styrofoam or paper cups) for your hot beverage at work, home, or in the car
  • Reusable tote bags of different sizes – Etsy is one of many sources for unique hand-crafted tote bags. A reusable lunch bag is another nice upgrade.
  • Cloth coffee filters
  • Reusable tea infuser that can be washed and reused multiple times
  • Reusable food storage and toiletry bags (such as those marketed online by Stasher and many other companies)
  • Beeswax wrap instead of plastic wrap for covering leftovers in bowls or other glassware in your refrigerator
  • Eco-friendly laundry detergent sheets

Extra Credit - If You’re Really into Being Green

  • If your new residence doesn’t have on-site recycling, research recycling centers in your new area. Take acceptable items to the center every few weeks.
  • When you can, air dry your clothes instead of using the dryer. Dryers are notorious energy hogs.
  • If you do need to purchase a new kitchen item or another handy helper while you’re on the road, try a thrift store or second-hand shop. They’re fun!
  • When it’s time for an upgrade, look for an energy-efficient tech device.
  • Choose local and organic food if available and your budget permits. Most importantly, don’t purchase so much that you’ll end up throwing it out. Food waste is a big issue in the U.S.
  • Consider a fuel-efficient car and drive it mindfully. The cross-country trips that are part of travel nurse life will make you appreciate that high MPG!
We know it’s not always easy to figure out the best way to be eco-friendly. There are trade-offs in every choice we make. But mindfulness is the first step. Start with one small “green” move, and you may find yourself implementing more and more without even thinking twice.
